About
FoodWIse (formerly known as the Wisconsin Nutrition Education Program) is dedicated to addressing the diverse nutrition needs of low-income residents in Wood County. For over 20 years, the program has provided educational services designed to promote healthful eating, smart food purchasing, safe food handling, and overall food security. Through FoodWIse, individuals and families are equipped with knowledge and skills to make informed food choices, stretch their food dollars, and maintain healthier diets.
The program reaches thousands of residents each year, offering resources and support at community locations throughout the county. This initiative is aimed at empowering the community to make positive dietary and lifestyle changes.
Who and Where We Teach
- Youth: Hundreds of school-age children receive lessons annually at elementary schools, Head Start programs, and youth summer programs across the county. Youth-focused lessons emphasize making healthy food choices and practicing basic food safety.
- Parents: Nutrition education is provided to parents of young children at locations such as WIC, Head Start, the YMCA, and local schools. Topics covered include feeding young children, preparing healthy meals, stretching food budgets, and creating a positive family mealtime environment.
- Seniors: Educational sessions at senior sites focus on food safety, budget-friendly meal planning, and incorporating more fruits, vegetables, and whole grains into their diet.
- Adults: FoodWIse educators partner with local food pantries, community meal sites, and technical colleges to support FoodShare recipients and other eligible individuals. Education centers on managing food dollars and choosing healthy foods, often in collaboration with county and Extension programs.
